It's all about construction

Piping

Piping is a system of pipes used to convey fluids from one location to another. It also transports oil, gas, and some solids. It is crucial for moving raw and semi-processed fluids for refining into more useful products. Plumbing is a common form of piping. Industrial process piping can be manufactured from wood, glass, steel, aluminum, plastic and concrete. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is next to steel as the commonly available piping material. The in-line components in piping sense and control the pressure, flow rate and temperature of the transmitted fluid

Though subject to corrosion, metal piping is strong, inexpensive and easy to handle. Non-metallic piping like fiberglass and thermoplastic is not as strong as metal piping. Plastic can be brittle and subject to ultraviolet attack.

A major concern in piping is corrosion caused by the concentration of dissolved chemicals or gases. Soil types, presence of groundwater and induced current fields from power lines may accelerate exterior pipe corrosion. One solution in piping corrosion is the use of cathodic protection.
