Humidity Control Equipment (15760)

Indoor air quality affects not only people’s health and mental capacity, it can also damage many kinds of equipment and materials, like wood, textile fibers, leather or chemicals, paper, computer disks, films and paintings. Humidity control equipment provides people healthier and comfortable interior environment and protects delicate materials from destructive molds, spores, and mildew.

Humidity is the concentration of water vapor in the air. Improper humidity levels (too high or too low), dry air, or fluctuating humidity is undesirable so needs to be controlled. Temperature and pressure have marked effects on air density; however, humid (moist) air is lighter than dry air. Increasing humidity helps eliminate dry air that may irritate nasal and throat passages.

Relative humidity is the ratio that compares the amount of water vapor in the air with the amount of water vapor that would be present in the air at saturation. A humidistat is an instrument for measuring humidity. The ASHRAE Standard 55-1992 Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy recommend keeping relative humidity between 30% and 60%, with below 50% preferred to control dust mites. A humidifier is a device for increasing or maintaining the humidity of a room, whereas a dehumidifier removes moisture from the air.

The basic parts of a humidifier are the reservoir, wick, and fan. The reservoir is a tank of water filled prior to operation and provides the water for the moisture output. The wick is a filter that absorbs water for the reservoir. The fan blows on the water the filter evaporates. Types of humidifiers are vaporizers (steam humidifiers), impeller humidifiers and ultrasonic (cool mist humidifiers). The basic parts of a dehumidifier include fan, compressor, (making the device noisy), evaporation and condenser coils, condensation pan, reservoir bucket and drain hose. Among kinds of dehumidifiers are home, basement (most common location for the device), small, portable and closet.

Companies selling humidity control equipment advertise their products by marking features like humidifiers with build-in ion device, with automatic power off when water level is low, with anti-fungus, anti-bacteria water tank, with pilot light indicator and water refill alarm, or with nanometer and antibiotic engineering plastics. Special qualities of dehumidifiers may include ability to remove up to 50 pints of water from the air in a 24 hour period with reservoir capacity of 21 to 22 pints, having rheostat which allows machine to adjust to overall humidity, having rolling castors for easy maneuver, having “squirrel cage” type of fan for blowing dried air and having the ability to hold 65 pints of water.
