Floor Heating and Snow Melting Equipment (15770)

Enclosed spaces needed to be warmed or heated during winter. One popular choice now is radiant floor heating which dates back to Roman times. Unlike conventional air systems, wood stoves, or other heating methods which produce uneven heat, with the highest air temperatures near the ceilings, radiant floor system heats room floor from the floor up. It works by embedding special tubing in a concrete foundation or in a thin concrete mixture on top of a wood-framed floor. The warm water circulated through the tubing in a radiant floor may come from solar collectors, water heaters, demand water heaters, wood stoves, or heat pumps. Radiant floor heating eliminates the draft and dust problems associated with forced air heating system. Radiant electric floor heating, for example, being low Wattage and low temperature heating is very energy efficient. It can be installed under tile, natural stone, hardwood, carpet and floating wooden floors.

Spaces exposed to snow such as driveways, walkways, patios, porch steps, etc. may cause property damage and slip and fall accidents. For this reason various ways have been devised to eliminate snow-build-up. One technological alternative to many snow removal methods is snow melting system or heated driveways. The system consists of tubing which is run under a driveways, walkways, patios, porch steps, etc. Heated water is pumped through the tubing. The water in snow melting system is mixed with an anti-freeze (glycol). Heat radiates up from the tubing to the surface of the driveway, melting away snow and ice. Driveways compatible with snow melting system installation are concrete and asphalt because they are smooth and even surfaces.

The three components of a snow melting system are the following:

-a heated element which is embedded in the slab
-ensors to detect outdoor air temperature and moisture
-power source
-controller to tie the heating equipment, sensors and power source together

Snow melting system is less expensive and less labor intensive than snow removal equipment, snow plowing services, or de-icing chemicals.
