It's all about construction

Drinking Fountains

Regardless of their designs which may range from antique to traditional to fanciful, drinking fountains should release clean water fit for humans and pet animals. Waterways, for example, should be lead-free in materials and construction. The drinking fountain should be a non-pollutible unit completely sealed against ground water contamination. Upon use, water held in the reservoir is evacuated to the drain before incoming fresh water flows to the bubbler. In sum, there must be no cross connection between the clean water supply and any possible source of external contamination. Drinking fountain operators and owners in the US are legally liable for failure to properly filter, chlorinate or otherwise treat the water.

Drinking fountain components and parts include frame, bubbler, bubbler projector, basin, receptor, pushbutton activation mechanism, stream height regulator, inlet strainer, water inlet, drain outlet, cooling or coils, mouthpiece, protective guard, screws and fittings. Examples of drinking fountains are free-standing, built-in, wall or post-mounted, pedestal, barrier-free pedestal, etc.

Drinking fountains are commonly found in schools, boats, golf courses, playgrounds, and other public places such as roadside rest areas, parks, and picnic or camping areas. For this reason they should be weatherproof. Moreover, since they serve people with disabilities, they must be designed to meet the requirements of the National Center on Accessibility.
